Effect of formalin preservation on the body length of copepods

چکیده

Two copepod groups – Acartia bifilosa adults and nauplii – were examined for the effect of preservation with 4% formalin solution on their total body length. The length of the same individual was measured before, immediately, one week, and two months after formalin fixation. There was no statistically significant difference in live and preserved copepod body length at any time of measurement either in the case of adults or nauplii. Therefore it is suggested that the body length of copepods drawn from preserved samples can be used as an unbiased measure for the calculation of copepod biomass from the length–weight relationship.

Early Miocene amber inclusions from Mexico reveal antiquity of mangrove-associated copepods

Copepods are aquatic microcrustaceans and represent the most abundant metazoans on Earth, outnumbering insects and nematode worms. Their position of numerical world predominance can be attributed to three principal radiation events, i.e. their major habitat shift into the marine plankton, the colonization of freshwater and semiterrestrial environments, and the evolution of parasitism. Their var...

Building freshwater macroinvertebrate DNA-barcode libraries from reference collection material: formalin preservation vs specimen age

As part of its ongoing work in biomonitoring, Environment Canada’s Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) program has assembled an expert-verified reference collection of 3864 specimens of 604 species of Canadian freshwater macroinvertebrates. Such collections are a key resource for developing a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) barcode library to facilitate molecular identification of biomon...
